A 90s desktop on your phone, from 1998 to 2010
By the Focus98 team · Updated
Grey windows, a Start button, a taskbar clock, the hum of a screensaver: Focus98 is a 90s desktop for your phone, and it grows through the Y2K years as you focus.
Why the old desktops still pull us in
They were calm. A computer did one thing at a time, and you could see all of it: a window, a taskbar, a few icons. There's a whole revival around that feeling now, from the Y2K aesthetic of chrome and translucent plastic to Frutiger Aero, the glossy, sky-blue, water-and-glass look of mid-2000s tech. Some of it is real memory; a lot of it is nostalgia for a time people never lived through.
Four eras
- Focus 98: beige boxes, a teal desktop and a dial-up modem.
- Bluebird 2001: rounder windows, broadband and a CD writer.
- Chroma 2005: glossy glass and aqua, in the spirit of the Frutiger Aero years, plus Wi-Fi and the first viruses.
- Dawn 2010: a new taskbar, fiber and a solid-state drive.

The details
Windows you open from desktop icons and the Start menu, a taskbar with a clock, screensavers that start after a few idle minutes, wallpapers from real public-domain photos, a messenger, a media player and a shop for upgrades. Each era brings its own look, sounds and programs, and a WelcomeOS Wizard that shows what's new.
It runs on focus
Focus98 isn't just a theme. Each focused minute earns credits to spend on the PC; time in distracting apps slows it down; and moving up an era is something you work toward, not something you download.
Note Focus98's eras are our own, made in the style of their years. They aren't copies of any real operating system.
